Parquet in the bathroom - is that possible?

FAQ Current

Many people dream of a warm, natural parquet floor to beautify their home. But what does it look like if you want to bring this look into the bathroom? The question of whether parquet flooring can be laid in the bathroom is one that concerns many homeowners and renovators. The answer: yes, it is possible! However, there are a few things to consider to ensure that the parquet floor can withstand the moisture-rich conditions in the bathroom. In this blog post, we explain what's important, what options are available and how you can get the best out of your parquet flooring in the bathroom.

Advantages and challenges of parquet in the bathroom

As mentioned in the introduction: parquet in the bathroom can basically create a beautiful and warm atmosphere, but there are a few things to consider if you decide to go for it:

Advantages of parquet flooring in the bathroom:

Appearance: parquet looks warm, cozy and elegant. It goes well with modern bathrooms.
Comfort: Wood feels more pleasant than ceramic tiles, especially natural on the feet.
Durability (with the right care): High quality engineered wood flooring used for damp areas can last for many years with good care.

Challenges of a wooden floor in the bathroom:

Moisture: the bathroom is a damp room, and as you know, wood is sensitive to moisture. If the wood is not sufficiently protected or is not suitable for use in the bathroom, it can warp, swell or discolor.
Maintenance effort: Regular maintenance is necessary to protect the parquet from water.

In short: if you are prepared to ensure proper handling and care, parquet in the bathroom can be both beautiful and practical! It's best to discuss this topic with your local Scheucher specialist dealer and take a look at our data sheet on parquet in the bathroom:

Scheucher parquet in the bathroom - this is the most important information:

TECHNICAL INFORMATION SCHEUCHER PARQUET in bathrooms

Scheucher parquet is approved for installation in rooms of hazard class 1 according to EN 335 in accordance with the standards applicable to parquet. These are dry interior rooms only. Other interior rooms with exposure to high humidity, interior components in wet areas with water-repellent coverings as well as exterior components without direct weather exposure fall into hazard class 2 according to EN 335. Bathrooms undoubtedly belong to this class.

For this reason, Scheucher's multilayer parquet floor must comply with a number of important rules when installed in bathrooms:

  • Only use low-swelling wood species (f.e.Oak, American walnut )!
  • Calm gradings like Select or Nature result in less reaction on the wood and reduces the risk of cracks and thus potential water penetration.
  • Water and wood only tolerate each other when exposed for a very short time!
  • Therefore, standing water and "water battles" must either be avoided completely or the floor must be wiped dry again immediately afterwards.
  • High humidity above 70% must be avoided, so always ventilate after showering!
  • The substrate must be moisture-resistant.
  • All gaps to walls and other fixed parts of the building must be filled elastic and watertight.
  • Floating installation is not possible due to the danger of bulging.
  • Fully glue down installation results in less visible joints and lower visibility of swelling.
  • The adhesives must be waterproof (e.g. PU or MS adhesive)!
  • installation must be carried out according to the specifications of the adhesive manufacturer for installation in damp rooms.
  • Only a licensed installer can meet these requirements!
  • Only oiled/waxed floors (SEDA) can absorb and release water vapor without leaving visible traces on short ends, edges, microcracks and/or other damaged areas in the medium term.
  • Careful care and regular refreshing with our care-wax-oil are indispensable for good water compatibility of the parquet.
